  1. Can I drive a Truck or Bus before I obtain my licence?

Until you obtain your heavy vehicle licence endorsement you may drive a heavy vehicle only if you are accompanied by a person who holds a 2-years old valid licence for the type of vehicle you are driving. You must display ‘L’ plates at the front and rear of the vehicle. While learning to drive a heavy vehicle, your Blood Alcohol Concentration must be ZERO.

  1. Can I get HR licence without having LR or MR licence?

Yes, if you have at least 2 years old car license including overseas license or Provisional License then you are eligible to apply for HR license.

  1. How old a car licence should require getting an HR licence?

You would require having at least 2 years old car license including overseas license or Provisional License to apply for an HR license.

  1. How do I make a booking with JD’s Truck Training Centre?

To make a booking you can either call us 0484 11 22 22 or send us an enquiry using an enquiry form.

  1. How long is your wait time for bookings?

Our wait times fluctuate during different times of the year, although we are generally fully booked out for 2 weeks in advanced. To avoid disappointment please call us 0484 11 22 22 ASAP to secure the closest date. Our availability slot changes by the hour, and we don’t want you to miss out.

  1. Is your training one-on-one or in groups?

All Heavy Vehicle courses are conducted one-on-one.

  1. What do I need to bring for the training?
  • Australian driver’s licence or Permit
  • If you have permit, then one Australian Photo ID proof
  • Must bring Reading/Driving glasses if required
  • Sunglasses and a bottle of water are suggested but not required
  1. What is your cancellation policy?

We have a 7-day cancellation/change of date policy. If you require to change, reschedule or cancel your course we must be notified a minimum full 7 days prior to the commencement of your course. Failure to do this will result in all fees paid being lost. Fees will also be lost if you fail to turn up for your course. Please note all courses include a non-refundable administration fee.

  1. What should I wear for training? Is there any specific requirement for dressing while learning to drive?

Yes. The learner must wear comfortable clean clothing. Covered shoes (no thongs/sandals/no steel-cap shoes/open toed shoes are allowed. If you do arrive for your course wearing either of these, you will be sent home to retrieve suitable footwear and the time taken to do so will be deducted from your course hours. Reading / Driving / Sunglasses if required.

  1. What is CBT&A?

CBT&A stands for Competency Based Training and Assessment (Call logbook as well). It is a method of obtaining a heavy vehicle licence in South Australia. A student is required to follow the government training manual and complete all tasks from start to finish. This method of training can be completed with the same Government Qualify Authorised Examiner from start to finish.

  1. What is VORT?

VORT stands for Vehicle On Road Test, this method of assessment doesn’t require the student to complete the government training manual. In VORT, Government Qualify Instructor will train all day and Government Qualify Authorised Examiner taking test at end.

  1. Will I pass my test on my first attempt?

Success on your driving test depends on various factors, such as your preparation, confidence and skills. Practice you’re driving and review the road rules before attempting your test.

  1. Can I use my own vehicle for training and assessment?

Yes, provided it meets all the government requirements. Ask our staff and they can assist you with that information.

  1. Common mistake students make during their driver training.

Incorrect signalling: not signalling for turn or lane changes and zip merges when required.

Speeding over/under: Not complying with posted speed limit or causing another vehicle to slow down by being too far under the speed limit.

Stopping position: over a stop line or traffic light lines

Stop sign: not stopping, stopping over the line or too far back.

Mirror checking & observation: not checking mirrors or looking through intersections.

Give way: student not giving way, not selecting the correct gaps when entering traffic or changing lanes.

Lane straddling: when crossing lane line, you must signal.

  1. Is CITB available?

JD’s Truck Training Centre is not registered with the CITB.

  1. What can I drive with an HR licence in Adelaide?

An HR (Heavy Rigid) licence in South Australia authorizes the holder to drive a range of heavy vehicles, as outlined in official government guidelines. The following table details the vehicles you can operate:

Vehicle Type Specific Details
Vehicles from preceding classes Any vehicle authorized by lower classes (C, LR, MR).
Rigid vehicle (not articulated or special purpose) 3 or more axles, GVM > 8 tonne.
Towing Single trailer (not semi-trailer), GVM ≤ 9 tonne, within GCM limits under Heavy Vehicle National Law (South Australia). Can tow any farm implement.
Articulated bus 3 or more axles, GVM > 8 tonne.
Special purpose vehicle 3 or more axles, GVM > 15 tonne.


Additional Requirements:
 You must carry your driver’s licence card or digital licence if driving a vehicle over 4.5 tonne GVM. 

  1. How much does an HR license cost in Adelaide, South Australia?

The cost of an HR licence in Adelaide can vary depending on the training method (Competency Based Training and Assessment [CBT&A] or Vehicle On Road Test [VORT]), the number of hours needed, and individual circumstances.

Rather than providing a fixed cost, which can change, it’s best to contact JD’s Truck Training Centre directly for the most up-to-date pricing.

  1. What If I Fail In the HR Truck Licence Test?

If you fail the HR truck licence test in South Australia, the process allows for retaking the test after adequate preparation. JD’s Truck Training Centre offers support in this scenario, providing additional training to help you improve your skills.

Their experienced instructors will review your performance, focus on areas needing improvement, and ensure you’re ready for another attempt.

    Hey guys, if u want to get HR , MR and LR ( auto or manual) I would highly recommend JD’s truck training centre.
